Develop your dream and then live it out in Van Wert County.
That’s the message of Rural by Choice, a program designed to encourage teenagers to ultimately work and raise their families in the same county in which they were raised. The project started through the Van Wert County Economic Development Office and ties into a Straight A grant awarded to county schools. One focus of the grant is to put students directly in contact with local businesses and business owners.
Teams of local entrepreneurs and community leaders are meeting with junior high and high school students throughout the school year to discuss the advantages of living in a rural setting. Students learn about the variety of professional, agricultural, and trade jobs available in the regional job market from those who are looking for workers. Interviewing techniques, resume building, and mobile employment opportunities via technology are also topics of discussion.
Ultimately, the Rural by Choice program will pair high school juniors and seniors with local companies to give the future workforce a glimpse into job opportunities here at home.
