Sheriff's Auxiliary
Van Wert County

How It Began & Its Purpose
The Van Wert County Sheriff's Auxiliary is a volunteer organization consisting of  special deputies and communications officers. Auxiliary special deputies are certified police officers whose training consists of over 600 hours of training that the State of Ohio mandates. Sheriff Wilmer Clay started the organization in 1953.  The first Captain was Frank Friemoth and first Lieutenant was Wayne Pollock. The members were Veterans of Foreign War post members at the time. Auxiliary deputies assist the Van Wert County Sheriff's Office during the fair, basketball and football games, security for business's around Van Wert County and when requested from service organizations. Special deputies also patrol the county with regular deputies.
          Auxiliary Christmas Project
A special project that the auxiliary has taken on is the Christmas with Kids. This organization collects donations from local businesses and public donations. They then take needy children out for a morning of Christmas shopping. The deputies are assigned different families and the child is able to spend approximately $100.  The auxiliary works with the Caring & Sharing program to make sure most of the needy kids have a nice Christmas. Of course, donations for this cause are always welcome. If you are interested in donating to The Christmas with Kids Program, please make a check payable to:
